Farmers benefited under Congress rule: YSR

G. Ravikiran

TDP neglected the sector during its nine-year rule, he says

No guarantee that TDP will complete Pulichintala, he says

Chiru has no interest to address people’s needs, he asserts

GUDIVADA: Reiterating his charge that the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) neglected farmers during its nine-year rule, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Tuesday asserted that there was no guarantee that the TDP would complete the Pulichintala project, as it entered into an alliance with the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), which was opposed to the project.

“The TRS filed a case in the Supreme Court against Pulichintala. As a result, there was a delay of one and half years. So it could not be completed. Doesn’t the TDP have shame to enter into a tie-up with such a party?” asked Dr. Reddy.

He was addressing a well-attended public meeting at Nehru Chowk in this town, the nerve centre of Krishna delta, as part of a series of roadshows and public meetings he addressed in Krishna district.

Performance

Dr. Reddy addressed meetings at Gannavaram, Kaikaluru, Pedana, Pamarru, Kankipadu and some places in the city before winding up for the day.

Dr. Reddy devoted most part of his speech here to flaying the TDP for its “failure” to address farmers’ problems during its nine-year rule. He asked the crowd to compare the performance of the TDP government and that of the Congress and see how the lot of farmers and agricultural workers had substantially improved by virtue of good crops and remunerative price for paddy.

“While the TDP had increased the minimum support price of paddy by just Rs. 50 in its nine-year rule, our government enhanced it from Rs. 580 to Rs. 930. Is it not a good achievement for us?” he asked.

Drawing a big round of applause, Dr. Reddy made a special mention of his government’s commitment to women and said that every household got Rs. 500 to Rs. 2,000 a month under Indiramma Abhaya Hastham scheme. “We are giving you rice at Rs. 2 a kg. We have exempted you from paying additional Rs. 50 per cooking gas cylinder. TDP did not do these things. Did you ever get ration cards under TDP rule?” Dr. Reddy asked the crowd.

He mocked at the Praja Rajyam, saying it was “cinemala party” (a party of films) with its leader Chiranjeevi not having any interest to know and solve the needs of the people.

Kolleru issue

Dr. Reddy landed at Gannavaram airport around 11.30 a.m. and addressed the first meeting of the day in Gannavaram town, where he spoke of his government’s resolve to complete the Polavaram project and modernise Nagarjunasagar ayacut for solving the drinking water problem in the constituency.

At Kaikaluru, he said that the Congress government had got a resolution unanimously passed in the Assembly to reduce the size of the Kolleru Lake from contour +5 to contour +3, but legal hurdles had come in the way.

The Congress was committed to the welfare of fishermen, he assured.
