Three-week protest ends after Thai military shows its force

P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE: A show of force, not its actual use, by Thailand’s military on Tuesday quelled the protest that gripped the capital, Bangkok, for three weeks.

The “people’s revolution” had, at one stage, attracted as many as 1,00,000 by official estimates. Towards the end, the number came down to just a few thousands at the focal point of protest, the Government House. They gave up, in the face of heavy deployment by the Army all around the site. In a “negotiated” end, they trooped out after security checks while some protest leaders were arrested, according to independent observers. The end-game was peaceful, following clashes and a military crackdown on Monday under an emergency decree.
