WEAVING A WONDER: A worker displays a saree made of Aloe Vera fibre at Anakaputhur in Chennai.
CHENNAI: Weavers of Anakaputhur, a southern suburb of Chennai, have successfully experimented with aloe vera (‘kaththazhai’) fibre to create clothing material and sarees.
Members of the Anakaputhur Jute Weavers Association on Wednesday said it was in continuation of their experiments with different natural fibres since the last quarter of 2007. They had experimented with non-conventional fibres such as jute, banana, pineapple and bamboo.
Speaking at a function in Anakaputhur, they said the use of aloe vera fibre had proved successful as they were able to weave sarees and shirt material. The Anakaputhur branch of Indian Bank had come forward to fund the weavers. The Department of Industries and Commerce of the State government had evinced keen interest in the project, the weavers told reporters.
According to the weavers, they found buyers for fabrics woven from non-conventional fibre in Bangalore and Chennai.
