“Kulir 100 degree”

S. R. Ashok Kumar

CHENNAI: Female directors are not new to Tamil films.

Right from T. P. Rajalakshmi, Bhanumathi Ramakrishna, Vijaya Nirmala, Suhashini Mani Ratnam to the more-recent entrant Madhumita, Kollywood has seen many talents.

And now, Anita Udeep, who has done two English films, is working on a Tamil film titled ‘Kulir 100 degrees’. She has the credit of working with one of the most popular names in Hollywood — Stephen Spielberg.

She was selected to work with Dream Works and has been there for nearly a year-and- a-half. “I wanted to make a film on teenagers, the most crucial years in one’s life. I found it interesting to capture their thought process. The title ‘Kulir 100 degrees’ means it is cold and hot, reflecting the state of the mind of teens.

Asked if her film was a bilingual project, Ms. Udeep said it was a Tamil and Telugu film. “We have given the film different tones based on the mood of the characters and their reactions. We are also working on a lot of visual effects now.”

Speaking about her interest in films, she says: “I finished my engineering at Sri Venkateswara College, Chennai, and completed a 3-year Masters course in film making in the United States. I made a short film ‘Flowery Thorn’, which got Dream Works interested. After that I got the opportunity to work with director Stephen Spielberg and his crew on the science-fiction series titled ‘Taken’.”

On her co-technicians, the young director says: “Cinematography is handled by L. K. Vijay, Aravind Krishna’s associate and has done an excellent job in capturing the different moods of the film. He is full of enthusiasm”, adding, “We have roped in BoBo Shashi for the music. He is a part of the hip-hop band, Thug Laws. He is bringing in new sounds and the music will definitely be a huge hit. The most challenging part is scripting, where one tries to make others see your dream.”
