Three-day workshop on responsibilities of police officials held CHENNAI: A three-day workshop on responsibilities of police in the ensuing Lok Sabha election, concluded on Wednesday. Senior police officials, including Commissioner of Police K. Radhakrishnan and Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) A.K. Viswanathan, took part in the programme. The duty of police personnel during election process were explained in detail by election officials. The method of enforcing the code of conduct on political parties and candidates were also discussed. Instructions were given to ensure the conduct of election in a free and fair manner. Chennai Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni explained the do’s and don’ts during campaigning and polling to around 150 police officers each of three days. Detailing the election schedule, he gave a list of poll-related violations and relevant sections. He said that police permission for street corner meetings had to be obtained at least 48 hours ahead, the approximate number of chairs, tables, lights and speakers to be used in the meeting must be mentioned in the application form. Meetings must not be permitted in government or private schools and colleges. He said that candidates must not distribute diaries, calendars or watches with their pictures. Temporary election offices must not be set up near places of worship, educational institutions and hospitals or within 200 metres of polling centres.
