3 held for death of retired librarian

Staff Reporter

VANIYAMBADI: Three persons have been arrested for beating a retired librarian to death during a discussion about organising a temple festival near Alangayam on Wednesday.

Police said the festival at Mariamman Temple, Rajapalayam, in Narasingapuram was being organised every year. During a discussion on Wednesday, Munuswamy (70), a retired librarian, had stressed that his son Karthikeyan should take the ‘Karagam.’ Venkatesan, a retired headmaster, Balashankar, Udayakumar and Muniraj, who were participating in the discussion, objected to it.

Following a verbal duel, Venkatesan, Balashankar, Udayakumar and Muniraj attacked Munuswamy. He was taken to the Government Hospital at Vaniyambadi but he succumbed to injuries.

Munuswamy’s son Karthikeyan lodged a police complaint. The police arrested Venkatesan, Balashankar and Udayakumar. Muniraj was absconding.
