‘I need not keep BJP informed about my movements’

Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA: “When there are instances of candidates having won the elections from jail, why should I not fight my election from a hospital bed?”

This was how S. Bangarappa, the former Chief Minister and Congress candidate for Shimoga Lok Sabha constituency, reacted to speculations about his “frail” health.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, he said: “If I am not seen in the constituency, rumours are rife in the Bharatiya Janata Party camp that my health condition has deteriorated. Even if I remain out of the constituency for a health reason why should it be a matter for discussion in the BJP circle. I need not take permission from the Bharatiya Janata Party to leave the constituency.”

He said: “I need not keep the BJP people informed about my movements. It does not mean that it is compulsory for a candidate to be in the constituency canvassing all the time. This Bangarappa is not that type of candidate. I can manage my campaign even from my house.”

Mr. Bangarappa said: “I heard that my health condition has been a matter of fierce discussion in the BJP circles. It is true that I am not well for the last several days. But one should not speculate on the health of a candidate in the election and rejoice about it. Instead we should wish the speedy recovery for those keeping ill health. After all we are all mortals. Anything may happen to anybody any time. We should maintain minimum decency by refraining from commenting on anybody’s health in public.”

He said: “I know Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurapa also suffers from diabetes. He even fainted once in a public meeting. I have concern for his health. I never indulge in any speculation about his health. I wish him a good health.”
