Kashyap Ashok storms into the final

Special Correspondent

Mysore: Kashyap Ashok stormed in to the boys under-14 singles final of the AITA Talent Series junior tennis championship conducted by the Raghuveer Tennis Club, with a 7-6(5), 6-2 victory over the top seed, S.D. Prajwal Dev in the semifinals on Thursday.

Kashyap was in a bit of a spot in the first set after racing to a 5-2 lead. But by curbing his natural aggressive instincts, he went into a defensive mode.

He found himself in trouble as his rival pinned him to the back court with steady ground strokes.

Prajwal Dev rallied to level at 5 and pushed the set to a tie-breaker. Kashayap, a ward of coach Peter Vijay Kumar at Tennis Advantage (Bangalore), sealed it at 7-6 (5).

Reverting to his attacking style, Kashyap raced to an easy 6-2 win in the second to book his spot in the final where he meets the second seed, Suraj R. Prabodh, who defeated the third seed, S. Kishan 6-2, 6-2 in the other semifinal.

In the boys’ under-18 singles, Vikas Hansoge of Karnataka will meet Tamil Nadu’s Monish Rajer. Vikas defeated local lad, H.J. Prajwal in a three setter 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Short work

Monish made short work of Suraj R. Prabodh at 6-2, 6-4. Monish is thus in line for a double after he had won the under-18 doubles title partnering Praveen Raj.

In the girls’ under-14 singles semifinals, top seed Nupur Umashankar waged a grim battle to defeat fifth seed, C.S. Praneeta of Tamil Nadu, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(2).

The match went down to the wire in the decider after Nupur squandered an early lead but came good to take the match in the tie-breaker.

She now meets the second seed, Varunya Chandrashekar while in the under-18 final, fourth seed, Preethi Gokhale will take on Vidya Bharath.

Meanwhile Preethi Ujjaini and A.K. Padmapriya claimed the girls’ under-18 doubles title.
