Temperature soars to 39 degree Celsius

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: For the first time this summer, the mercury rose to 39 degree Celsius on Thursday in the southern suburbs of Chennai. The day temperature in the city was 36.4 degree Celsius.

Meteorological department officials said that in the past few days the temperature has been a few degree Celsius above the average temperature of 35 degree Celsius in April. The onset of sea breeze determined the day temperature and a delay made the heat severe.

The cyclonic storm, ‘Bijli’, which formed over the central Bay of Bengal and moved north-westwards on Thursday also contributed to the hot weather for the past two days. The low level winds along with storm blowing from westerly direction delayed the onset of sea breeze, the officials said.

The highest temperature recorded in the past decade in the city in April was 42.1 degree Celsius in 2006. Last year, the mercury shot up to 37.1 degree Celsius. The temperature touched an all-time high of 42.8 degree Celsius in 1908, the official added.

The Meteorological Department forecasts the maximum temperature on Friday to hover around 37 degree Celsius.
