TAMBARAM: A two-day conference on Electrical Energy System and Power Electronics in Emerging Economies (ICEESPEE ’09 ) got under way at SRM University in Kattankulathur on Thursday. Bhim Singh, professor from IIT, New Delhi, was the chief guest. He delivered the inaugural address and released the proceedings of the conference. The first copy was received by P. Sathyanarayanan, vice-chancellor of the university. Mr. Singh urged people to switch over to energy efficient appliances so that the power saved could be used for development. Regulations should be put in place so that the industry made only energy efficient appliances. Mr. Sathyanarayanan said that the university planned to instal Light Emitting Diode (LED) lamps in a big way as part of a major energy conserving initiative. It was planning to rope in professionals apart from involving students as part of a project to instal LED lamps that would consume very little power, while emitting light equal to conventional mercury or sodium vapour and metal halide lamps. The university would be launching a pilot project before expanding it on its premises. The return on investments could be achieved in a short span of time. T.P. Ganesan, pro vice-chancellor, planning and administration, R.Ramswami, professor and head, Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department, spoke.
