71 per cent polling in Thrissur district

Thrissur: Thrissur district on Thursday registered 71 per cent polling in the 15th Lok Sabha elections, according to an official press release here on Friday.

There was 69.47 polling in Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency, according to latest official figures available. Of 11,73,047 names in the voters list, 8,14,491exercised their franchise.

District Election Officer and Collector V.K. Baby said there would a slight increase in the polling percentage when postal service votes were counted.

Puthukad Assembly segment recorded 72.09 per cent, the highest in the parliamentary constituency. Thrissur Assembly segment recorded the lowest percentage: 66.30. The polling percentage in other Assembly segments are: Guruvayur (66.82); Manalur (69.53); Ollur (70.65); Nattika (70.66); and Irinjalakuda (68.54).

In all, 7,81,091 voters in the Thrissur Lok Sabha seat used identity cards issued by the Election Commission to exercise their franchise. The rest used other identity cards and documents approved by the ECI. In the Chalakudy Lok Sabha constituency, Kaipamangalam, Chalakudy and Kodungallur Assembly segments recorded 72.48 per cent, 70.07 per cent and 68 per cent polling, respectively. In the Alathur Lok Sabha constituency, Chelakkara, Kunnamkulam and Vadakkanchery Assembly segments registered 73.23 per cent, 71.40 per cent and 74.73 per cent polling, respectively.

In the 2004 elections, the pre-delimited Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency recorded 69.42 per cent polling.
