Thangkabalu asks cadre to work for their victory

K.V. Thangkabalu

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K.V. Thangkabalu has warned party workers of disciplinary action if they indulged in protests or demonstrations against the selection of party candidates for the Lok Sabha elections.

Mr. Thangkablau said this time round, the party had given representation to new faces, including youth and women. The candidates’ popularity and their party work in the constituency were the main criteria behind the selection. He wanted the cadre to work for the victory of the party candidates, whose candidature had been approved by party president Sonia Gandhi.

Addressing mediapersons here, the TNCC president asked the party candidates to highlight the achievements of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre during campaign.

He said Opposition parties, which had no issues to oppose the UPA regime, were indulging in personal attacks on Congress leaders. Voters were aware of their design and would teach them a lesson. The TNCC president said Ms. Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi would campaign in Tamil Nadu in support of DPA candidates.

Mr. Thangkabalu criticised AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa for her promise to scrap the Sethusamudram project if her alliance came to power at the Centre. He wanted to know whether the Pattali Makkal Katchi and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which were for early implementation of the project, subscribed to her views.
