Jama-ath seeks increase in number of Haj pilgrims

Staff Reporter

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore District Jama-ath has appealed to the Central and State Haj Committees to bring in procedural changes in the sanction for Haj pilgrimage.

The general secretary of Jama-ath, M.I. Mohammed Ali, in a memorandum said that as per the 2001 census, the Muslim population in the State was 37 lakh based on which 3,700 was the allocation for the number of Haj pilgrims from Tamil Nadu. Such a sanction was inadequate for a State like Tamil Nadu.

Mr. Mohammed Ali sought increase in the number of Haj pilgrims from Tamil Nadu by conducting a survey. As per norms, applicants who had travelled to Haj in the last five years are not eligible to travel once again.

He wanted a provision to be brought in wherein the applicant should get an endorsement from the Jama-ath that the person had not travelled in the last five years.

The memorandum also sought that every State Governments should maintain a waiting list. Similarly, an applicant who could not get a chance in a particular year should be accorded priority in the subsequent year.

The reservation for senior citizens should be brought back and subsidy for travel fare should be continued.
