State to host dinner in honour of Rahman

Special Correspondent

KOZHIKODE: The State government will host a dinner in honour of A.R. Rahman at the Kadavu Resort here when he is in the city for a music programme on May 3, Industries Minister Elamaram Karim, who is also the chairman of the organising committee, has said.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will be invited to attend the dinner, Mr. Karim said here on Saturday. A memento of the State government will also be presented to A.R. Rahman.

The music maestro is expected to reach the city with his 98-member troupe on May 2. K.S. Chithra, Hariharan, Benny Dayal, Javed Ali, Sivamani, and Sadhana Purushotham are on the list of musicians who would perform during the show. Rahman had asked the organisers to allow 30 percussionists from the city to take part in his programme.

They would be selected from among students below 15 years of age. Those interested should register at the reception committee office of the ‘Jai Ho’ programme before April 25.

Ticket sales

The sale of tickets for the programmes is brisk, according to Kerala Initiative, the organisers of the event. Tickets in the Rs.1,000 and Rs.5,00 denominations had been sold out.

The event is a fund raiser for Kerala Initiative’s welfare project for HIV-affected children. A counter for sale of tickets for the show is functioning at the Focus Mall here.

Over Rs.7 crore would be raised through sale of tickets. Those buying a ticket costing Rs.25,000 would have the privilege of getting it delivered at home. Al Hind Tours and Travels have announced free business class return tickets to and from Dubai for 10 persons who buy Rs.25,000-tickets. The winners would be selected by draw of lots.
