VISAKHAPATNAM: A mock drill was conducted at Hindustan Shipyard Limited to demonstrate its fire fighting and rescue preparedness on Saturday.

As part of the Fire Service Week celebrations, the fire service personnel gave demonstrations on tackling fire caught by oil, cylinder, acetylene gas and electricity following smothering methods. During the drill, a dummy victim was rescued from the top portion of a ship compartment and immediately rushed to HSL dispensary for first aid with the help of an ambulance.

HSL Chairman and Managing Director Naresh Kumar addressed the employees and contractors and explained to them on the importance of fire preventive methods on-board ships under construction and undergoing repairs.

He stated that fire fighting was very important in an industrial unit like shipyard. “It is very difficult to control fires in the vessels since ships have confined spaces packed with electrical equipment and a number of inflammable materials,” he said. The CMD suggested that fire accidents could be minimised by adopting safety precautions and avoiding smoking at work spots. He mentioned that major and minor fire fighting equipment were available in the fire service department and fire sentries were being posted on construction and repair vessels to prevent outbreak of fire while attending various works.

Mr. Naresh Kumar said the employees and contract workers should be aware of fire fighting system and expressed satisfaction over the way the mock drill was conducted.
