New energy saving device

R. Ramabhadran Pillai

Device has been found successful

The patent of the product is pending

Installed in Chennai, Bangalore railway stations

KOCHI: A new energy saving device introduced in the market is set to revolutionise the concept of saving power in the domestic arena. The device has been found to be successful in commercial establishments where the consumption is comparatively high, according to the manufacturers.

The device has been installed at major public and private sector establishments across the country, involving a total load of 70 megawatt out of which about 15 megawatt is saved, according to Ravikumar, General Manager (Technical), of ES Electronics (India) Private Limited, a Bangalore-based company that introduced the product.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Indian Oil Company, Tata Infotech, Nestle India, TVS Suzuki Limited, Hindustan Motors Limited, Motorola, Kochi Refineries, Hindustan Latex and Taj Malabar are among the establishments that have installed the device.

Approval

Though the patent of the product is pending, it has received approval from international agencies working in the energy sector, Mr. Ravikumar told The Hindu.

The device optimises the voltage to reduce the power intake and supplies the required amount of voltage to the electric circuit with lower induction density, according to the company. It converts high impedance power into low impedance power without affecting the illuminating capacity, says B. Gurudath Rao, who is coordinating the operations in Kerala.

The power available for the domestic consumer could be channelled separately for optimum savings. Thus, in an apartment complex, the power channels could be segregated into two — one for lighting and the other for purposes such as lift operations, air conditioning and working of motors. The energy savers could be installed separately to obtain maximum power saving.

A consumer paying a monthly electricity bill of Rs.2,000 can save about Rs.500 by installing the device, says Mr. Ravikumar. For those whose consumption is less, the energy saved will be comparatively less. This might create problems in convincing the consumer and hence the company is embarking on a new plan to install the device free of charge and share the cost of the energy saved.

The device has been installed on the National Highway stretch in Chennai.

It has also been installed at railway stations in Chennai and Bangalore to save power on lighting. The company is engaged in coordinating with various government agencies and research organisations to expand the reach of the device.
