Sound advice: W. Selvamurthy, Chief Controller, Research and Development, Ministry of Defence, handing over a certificate to a student in Madurai. MADURAI: Science and technology enabled a country to become self-sufficient and for which impetus on basic sciences was necessary at all levels of education. Three powers — sound economy, military strength and knowledge — were required to enter the power block, said W. Selvamurthy, Chief Controller, Research and Development, Ministry of Defence, recently. He was addressing students at the 61st Academic Day of Lady Doak College here. Dr. Selvamurthy said that Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) wished to seek partnership with educational institutions and was willing to offer jobs to postgraduates in physics, chemistry, botany, mathematics, bio-informatics and information technology. Despite the global recession, the Indian economy had been resilient and there were a good number of opportunities available to students within the country. Annual reportA. Mercy Pushpalatha, Principal, in her annual report, highlighted the diamond jubilee celebrations of the college during which many initiatives like release of a special postal cover on Lady Doak and inauguration of a hostel for postgraduates and research scholars were undertaken. Dr. Selvamurthy also released a book on Research Methodology on the occasion. About 1,000 outgoing students received their degree certificates.
