Packets of drinking water, juice, butter milk seized

CHENNAI: Chennai Corporation on Friday seized 52,000 packets of drinking water, fruit juice and butter milk from around 800 retail outlets in various parts of the city.
The packets did not meet the mandatory requirements such as printing of manufacturing date, address of the manufacturer, batch number and expiry date, said Corporation officials.
The Health Department has sent the seized food samples for analysis.
“Action will be taken under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954 on all manufacturers and retail sellers after results of the analysis are obtained,” said an official of the Corporation.
As contaminated food could cause acute diarrhoeal diseases, the civic body has taken this initiative based on complaints received from people.
Ten teams of Corporation officials examined the food packets sold in retail outlets in Flower Bazaar, Koyambedu, T.Nagar, Ayanavaram, Tondiarpet, Adyar, Vadapalani, Nungambakkam, Triplicane, Purasawalkam and Anna Nagar.
According to the Corporation, 32,800 packets of drinking water, 12,500 packets of fruit juices and 6,700 packets of butter milk were found unfit for consumption.
Chennai Corporation has asked people to avoid consumption of illegally manufactured food products sold in retail outlets.
It has distributed pamphlets to inform the public about the need for precautionary measures in food consumption during summer.
The precautionary measures include consumption of safe drinking water and properly cooked food.
