DUBAI: Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said his country’s armed forces are now well equipped to safeguard the security of the region and Tehran was prepared to play a role in resolving global problems. Speaking at a function marking Iran’s armed forces day, Mr. Ahamadinejad said “Iran’s armed forces guarantee the region’s security. He added that the Iranian nation was fully prepared to contribute to global management and security establishment based on justice.” Iran had recently participated in an international conference on Afghanistan, which the U.S. had helped convene at The Hague. It has also welcomed the U.S. decision to participate in a new format of nuclear talks with Iran which would also include the rest of the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and Germany. Iran has been building up its armed forces to counter military threats in the past from the U.S. and Israel. U.S. and Israel have repeatedly alleged that Iran has been developing nuclear weapons. Tehran has consistently denied the charge. On April 9, Mr. Ahmadinejad inaugurated Iran’s first nuclear fuel manufacturing plant.
