Modern biology units proposed in all medical colleges

HYDERABAD: Modern biology units will be set up in every medical college and a chain of institutions networked to ensure translation of medical research into health delivery system, Vishwa Mohan Katoch, secretary, Department of Health Research, said here on Sunday.

Talking to The Hindu after delivering a talk on ‘Bringing modern health technology to people: sharing of experiences’, Dr. Katoch, who is also the Director-General, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), said under the proposal, the Centre would fund the biology units. Government departments, NGOs, private bodies and universities could contribute towards achieving the goal of translating medical research.

The talk was organised by the Medically Aware and Responsible Citizens of Hyderabad (MARCH).

Stating that service and research were integral part of health delivery system, he said that model rural units would be established in the States, where modern technologies would be used for rapid and effective health care. He said once the Bio-Ethics Bill on stem cell research was passed, the regulatory authority would issue licences to institutions undertaking the research. State-level committees would be constituted to constantly monitor the work.

Dr. Katoch favoured stringent punishment to clinical trial organisations and other such bodies which violate the law. He said that it was also proposed to set up a network of centres in the States for surveillance of existing and new viruses.
