TB cases brought down in Tirupur
R. Vimal Kumar
Tirupur: Medical fraternity in Tirupur Health Unit District (HUD) had reasons to be cheerful when it observed World Tuberculosis Day recently as it had succeeded to bring the epidemic under control thanks to the outreach programmes launched under Revised-National Tuberculosis Control Programme.
Official sources told The Hindu that the number of fresh cases reported last year did not register any increase vis-a-vis the previous year (2007) unlike on earlier occasions when the cases were significantly rising every year. Death rate among TB patients came down from seven per cent in 2007 to six per cent last year. “Cure rate has been on a record high last year standing at 88.9 per cent,” Dr. J. Arivoli, Deputy Director of Medical Services (Tuberculosis), said.
