Praneeth wins

HYDERABAD: K. Praneeth Surya won the Open category invitation chess tournament with 4.5 points from five rounds, organised by the Jayaprada Chess Academy here.

K.S. Anand Reddy, with four points, was second. In the juniors’ category, S.S.V. Aditya won the title.

The top six placings: Open category: 1. K. Praneeth Surya, 2. K.S. Anand Reddy, 3. Prateek Srivastava, 4. Manoj Sainath, 5. V.S.S. Priya, 6. Pratyush Srivastava.

Juniors: 1. S.S.V. Aditya, 2. Y. Pavani, 3. Vardhan, 4. Vaibhav, 5. Akash, 6. Charan.

Easy for NBA

Nizam Basketball Academy recorded a 59-27 win over Flying Asteroids in the Hyderabad district annual basketball league championship here.

The results: Secunderabad Club 47 (Khanna 21, Alok 15) bt YMCA Hyderabad 34 (Vijay 18, Jack 15); Nizam Basketball Academy 59 (Samson 20, Vijay11) bt Flying Asteroids 27 (Arjun 15, Irfan 10).

Football camp

The Shastri Soccer Club (Trimulgherry) will organise annual summer coaching camp for boys from April 23, S. Tony, chief coordinator, said.

P. Shyam Kumar, Cantonment Board member, will inaugurate.

Ramana Rao dead

Former international cricket umpire Ivaturi Ramana Rao passed away in the City on Sunday. He collapsed while travelling in a bus and was declared brought dead to a private hospital. He was 79.

Ramana Rao, rated as one of the most respected umpires, officiated in the West Indies-India match which was also a benefit tie for former India captain Ghulam Ahmed.

Ramana Rao passed the umpires examination along with V.K. Ramaswamy and has been on the State panel for a long time before retiring in 1988.

The Hyderabad Cricket Association Secretary, N. Shivlal Yadav, expressed condolences to the bereaved family members. Cricket Umpires Association of Hyderabad also expressed profound shock at the demise of a “gentleman umpire.”
