Not terrorist?

This refers to the remark by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in a television interview that the goals of the LTTE are legitimate but the methods adopted by it to achieve them are not correct. He has also claimed that the LTTE chief V. Prabakaran — his friend — is not a terrorist but some of his followers have taken to terrorism.

What prevented Mr. Karunanidhi from asking his friend to tell his followers to adopt the right methods to achieve their goals?

If Prabakaran is not a terrorist, what is he? He is responsible for assassinating two important political leaders. On his orders, the LTTE eliminated all its political rivals and thousands of civilians. How is one to describe such an organisation and its leader?

The Congress should review its alliance with the DMK in view of the latter’s open support to the LTTE, an organisation banned in this country and branded terrorist by almost all the countries.

By speaking sympathetically about Prabakaran, Mr. Karunanidhi has not only embarrassed the Congress but has also shocked us. In fact, he said a few days ago that the LTTE should be seen in two phases — before and after Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination. His statement that he did not see Prabakaran as a terrorist and would be saddened if the LTTE chief was killed is surprising.

Almost all political parties in Tamil Nadu are competing with one another in lauding Prabakaran. But the people are aware that the LTTE is a terrorist outfit which has killed its own people for selfish ends.

Mr. Karunanidhi’s statement that Prabakaran is not a terrorist is shocking. It is clear that he is desperately trying to score over his political opponents.

Motupalli S. Prasad,

One can understand Mr. Karunanidhi’s political compulsions. His statement that Prabakaran is a friend, coming soon after Lalu Prasad’s embarrassing utterances over the Babri Masjid demolition, is truly a setback for the UPA.
