Strike will not ensure ceasefire: Jayalalithaa
PARAMAKUDI: The strike call given by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam will not help ensure ceasefire in Sri Lanka but will only cause inconvenience to the people of Tamil Nadu, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa has said.
“It is like adding insult to injury,” she said while seeking votes for party candidate for the Ramanathapuram Lok Sabha constituency, V. Sathyamoorthy, here on Wednesday.
“When the world is demanding ceasefire in Sri Lanka, the Chief Minister has called for a strike,” she said. If the Chief Minister was not going to press the Centre for ceasefire even at a critical juncture, when would that happen, she wondered.
Ms. Jayalalithaa made it clear that despite the strike call on Wednesday her election campaign would go on as per schedule. She pointed out that the Supreme Court had declared strike illegal on many occasions.
Accusing the Chief Minister of making contradictory statements on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam and the Sri Lankan issue, she said “The Chief Minister has lost his credibility … (by doing so) the real issue of the sufferings of Sri Lankan Tamils has not reached the Centre.”
“If the Congress still continued with its alliance with Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and supported the DMK Government in the State, it is nothing but an opportunistic alliance,” she said asking the people to vote it out.
The AIADMK leader promised to take efforts to remove the Centre’s ban on fishing of sea cucumber.
