KOLAR: Elaborative arrangements have been made for conducting polls in Kolar (SC) Lok Sabha constituency on Thursday. In all, there are 13,37,579 voters in this segment in which 22 candidates are in the fray. According to Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer N. Prabhakar, 1,912 polling booths have been set up in all the eight Assembly segments under this seat. Ramps have been erected at all the booths for the convenience of the physically challenged voters. Special arrangements would be in place for the visually challenged. As many as 2,319 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be pressed into service, he said. Main contendersCongress candidate K.H. Muniyappa, seeking re-election for the sixth time in a row, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s D.S. Veeraiah and the Janata Dal (Secular) nominee G. Chandranna are the strong contenders. Congress has won in 13 general elections since 1952. The segment rejected the Congress only once in 1984 when the Janata Party wrested the seat. The Republican Party of India leader M. Venkataswamy, the Bahujan Samaj Party’s N. Muniswamy, the Nationalist Congress Party’s Shanmugam, are the other prominent aspirants. DisqualifiedReturning Officer N. Prabhakar has declared independent candidate C.K. Muniyappa as ‘dummy candidate’. Since Mr. Muniyappa was engaged in campaigning in favour of Mr. Veeraiah, all the facilities sanctioned to the former has been withdrawn, Mr. Prabhakar said in a press release.
