Kerala to launch one of its biggest private cargo vessels today

ALAPPUZHA: One of the biggest multi-purpose marine cargo vessels said to be built in Kerala’s private sector, M.V. Karuthal, will be launched at Panavally near Cherthala here on Friday.
The vessel, constructed by the Century Shipyard here for the Singapore-based Trans Asia Shipping Services Private Limited, is estimated to have cost over Rs.14 crore after the keel was laid in August 2007. With a dead weight tonnage of 1,600 tonnes, a draft of 3.2 metres, a length of 67.58m, width of 12.8m and depth of 5.6m, the vessel is designed for a container capacity of 52 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units).
