Sheshappanahalli residents boycott election

Staff Correspondent

Chitradurga: Voters of Sheshappanahalli village in Hiriyur taluk of Chitradurga district boycotted the Lok Sabha election on Thursday.

The 736 voters of the village boycotted the election complaining that no public representative had met their demand of providing basic facilities in the village till now.

Deputy Commissioner and Retuning Officer Amlan Aditya Biswas told The Hindu that the district administration made efforts to convince the residents of the village to vote, but in vain.

When asked if there be repolling in the village, Mr. Biswas said that the question of repolling did not arise as residents had voluntarily refused to vote.

In Haledyamavvanahalli village of Challakere taluk, some of supporters of the Janata Dal (Secular) reportedly told the polling official, Krishnamurthy, that the entire village had decided to vote for a particular party.

They reportedly told the official that one person would vote on behalf of all the voters in the village. When the official refused to allow such a move, the supporters allegedly threatened him. This led to an altercation.

Additional police personnel rushed to the spot and dispersed the crowd. A case has been registered. However, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
