Members owing allegiance to the UDF boycotted the annual meeting

KOTTAYAM: The ball will set rolling for the restructuring of the undergraduate courses of the Mahatma Gandhi University during the current academic year, Vice Chancellor Rajan Gurukkal has said.

Winding up the reply to a call-attention motion during the annual meeting of the Mahatma Gandhi University Senate here on Saturday, he said the university has the intrinsic strength to complete the restructuring process within the time frame.

MG University has been the role model for implementation of the scheme in the postgraduate streams. The experiential edge clubbed with the solutions brought out by various other universities will enrich the MG University to successfully implement the programme, he said.

The meeting elected K. Sherafuddin, general secretary of the MG University Employees Association to the Statutory Finance Committee of the university at the meeting held here on Saturday. University authorities said this was for the first time in the history

of universities in Kerala that a member of the non-teaching staff was elected to the finance committee. The vacancy occurred following the resignation of Rajan Varughese, who has since become the Pro Vice Chancellor of the university.

Mr. Sherafuddin’s name was proposed by V.N. Vasavan, MLA. Meanwhile, members owing allegiance to the UDF have boycotted the annual meeting of the Mahatma Gandhi University Senate, held here on Saturday.

According to M.C. Dileep Kumar and P.J. Kurian, both members, the meet was held in breach of the provisions of the MG University Act and statute. As per rules, the annual accounts, budget and audit report should have been placed before the senate ‘in the fourth quarter of the financial year’. This means the annual meeting should be convened before March 31, they said.

However, in the present case, the meeting which was originally scheduled on March 31, was postponed without showing any reason, to April 4 and then to April 25.

Out of the 72 members, 54 attended Saturday’s meeting. Among them, nine members walked out in protest.
