Addressing a press conference here on Friday evening, Mr. Raghuramaiah said the port registered a growth of 9.36 per cent over previous year despite global meltdown in world market. He said in the traffic growth during 2008-09, the PPT had achieved third place among all major ports. “A record quantity of 5.13 million tonnes of cargo was handled during March this year surpassing the previous record of 4.70 million tonnes handled during February last,” Mr. Raghuramaiah said. The PPT Chairman said for the first time 1,40,392 tonnes of raw sugar was handled during 2008-09 and similarly 15,75,842 tonnes of crude oil was also imported through single point mooring during the same period. Taking into account of continuous increase in rail borne traffic, two 1,350 BHP locomotives were added to the existing seven locomotives, he said A single point mooring was commissioned in December 2008 for handling crude oil vessels, which had added about 15 million tonnes capacity to the port, Mr. Raghuramaiah said. On financial performance, the PPT Chairman said the port had made an operating income of Rs. 700.21 crores during 2008-09 as against Rs. 639.98 crores in 2007-08, he said. According to Mr. Raghuramaiah, the PPT was undertaking the works of deepening of the channel at a cost of Rs. 253.36 crores and on completion the port would be in a position to handle cape size vessels (up to 125000 dwt). Similarly, the depth of the entrance channel and approach channel would be increased from 13 metres to 17 metres and 15 metres to 18.70 metres respectively by March 2020. “One iron ore berth with back up facilities will be constructed through public private partnership mode. The concession agreement for the project would be signed by May this year,” Mr. Raghuramaiah said. Security beefed upClose on the heels of attack on NALCO’s mining operation point at Sunabeda recently and increasing threat of terrorist attack from sea side, the PPT chairman said efforts were being made to form quick reaction team among Central Industrial Security Force and CC cameras were being installed to monitor any attempt of sabotaging.
