India safe for Davis Cup tie, says Chidambaram

Aarti Dhar

NEW DELHI: The government on Saturday said India was completely safe for the Davis Cup tie and gave an assurance that fool-proof security would be provided for the event.

Rejecting Tennis Australia’s grounds to pull out of the tie, Home Minister P. Chidambaram said: “Davis Cup is one match, one visiting team, one venue, one small stadium, three days. India and the event are completely safe. Fool-proof security can and will be provided.”

Mr. Chidambaram’s reaction came following Australia’s withdrawal from the Asia-Oceania Group I tie in Chennai, citing security concerns and describing India as an “area of high risk.”

Tennis Australia appealed to the International Tennis Federation to shift its Davis Cup tie out of India due to security apprehensions.
