EC issues notice to Digvijay

J. Balaji

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission has issued notice to Congress general secretary in charge of Uttar Pradesh Digvijay Singh for allegedly threatening Chief Minister Mayawati that the CBI would be used against her if she continued to “harass” Congress workers.

Mr. Singh reportedly told Ms. Mayawati that she should understand that the case against her was pending with the CBI, and the Congress could get back, though it did not want to misuse the investigating agency.

The Commission, which saw the CD said to contain his anti-Mayawati speeches made at Malwan in Hardoi district on April 20, sent a copy to Mr. Singh too, asking him to reply by 5 p.m. on Sunday why action should not be initiated against him for violating the model code of conduct. If he failed to do so, the Commission would decide the matter without further notice.

Case filed

The Mallawan Kotwali police, based on the complaint of the local sub-divisional magistrate, have registered a case against Mr. Singh.
