Women achievers’ meet organised

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Today’s Malayali woman has nothing to be proud of except her western education and she has become a laughing stock, said poet Sugathakumari. She was speaking at the Women Achievers’ Conference ’09, organised by Shakti, the women’s wing of Swadeshi Science Movement, here on Sunday.

Women should be assured of equality, security and authority.

Women need to realise that their strength does not lie in beauty and glamour, she said. Dr. Khadeeja Mumthaz, professor of obstetrics and gynaecology, Kozhikode Medical College, who addressed the valedictory session said that women are hesitant to take more social responsibilities fearing that it might affect their role as a mother and wife. Mothers should ensure adequate nutrient intake for girl children too and should made them realise that they are loved and cared for.

Many incidents of girls falling prey to sex rackets can be traced to an insecure home atmosphere, Dr. Mumthaz said. On Saturday, B. Sandhya, IG of Police, inaugurated the conference.

The Women Achiever award was presented to Dr. C.G. Sudha, scientist at Tropical Botanical Garden and Research Institute, for her initiative in transferring technology from her laboratory to a group of women growing medicinal plants in Kanhikuzhi panchayat in Chertala.. Rosamma Stephen, former scientist, National Institute of Oceanography, chaired the conference. Dr. M.R. Santha Devi, former scientist at Naval Physical Oceanographic Laboratory, presided over the valedictory function.
