BJP politicising tuition fee hike issue: Kapil Sibal

Staff Reporter

‘Directorate of Education has taken steps to resolve the issue’

Kapil Sibal

NEW DELHI: Accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party of politicising the school tuition fee hike issue, Congress candidate for the Lok Sabha from Chandni Chowk Kapil Sibal on Sunday said it was unfortunate that his rival BJP candidate Vijender Gupta was exploiting the matter to further his political ambitions.

Mr. Sibal said after the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations, the Government had fixed the norm that only 25 per cent of the hike in the salaries of teachers would be charged from parents and the remaining would be borne by the school. “However, some schools did not adhere to the norm and unfairly raised the school tuition fee, much more than the stipulated 25 per cent. The Directorate of Education had on April 8 issued show-cause notices to 12 such schools,” said Mr. Sibal.

The Congress candidate said the Delhi Government had made it clear that no school would be allowed to increase the tuition fee without prior approval from the general body of its parent-teacher association in a duly convened meeting.

He said parents should come forward to submit their complaints so that necessary action could be taken without delay. The schools had also been told that they would not be allowed to remove any student or deny issuance of report cards on the basis of non-submission of enhanced fee. Mr. Sibal said his intervention had forced Ramjas School to postpone their decision on tuition fee hike.

“For progress to take place, it is important to come up with solutions and solve problems, rather than use them as an election tamasha,” said Mr. Sibal, seeking answers from Mr. Gupta on the languishing condition of Municipal Corporation of Delhi schools.
