dated April 28, 1959: Mao Tse-tung’s successor

Mr. Liu Shao-chi, a leading Marxist theoretician, became China’s Head of State in succession to Mao Tse-tung, it was reported in Peking on April 27. He was elected unanimously at the final meeting of the National People’s Congress (Parliament). Immediately after his election, he nominated Mr. Chou En-lai for a further term as Prime Minister, a position Mr. Chou has held since the Communists came to power in 1949. The election of Mr. Liu, who ranks second in the Communist Party hierarchy, followed the announcement that Mao wished to give up his position as Chairman of the People’s Republic of China to concentrate on Party work.
