Corrections and clarifications

The graphic accompanying a report “It’s the turn of the rural heartland” (“Elections 2009” page , April 23, 2009) showed that in Phase 2, the “Demographics statistics report” gave the break-up of the total 148 seats as SC-17, ST-14, Muslims-15 and Rural-102. A reader said the total seats in the second phase of elections was 141 (of which the Inner Manipur election was over on April 22). Mr. Yogendra Yadav, Senior Fellow Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, New Delhi, (and who wrote the article) clarifies that these categories are not mutually exclusive. The same seat can be Rural and SC/ST reserved, or have a significant Muslim population and be rural and SC/ST reserved. And there are some constituencies that fall in none of these categories. Hence the total can exceed the total number of seats.

A report “Vanisha Mittal, Pia Singh among billionaire heiresses: Forbes” (April 27, 2009) said that Ms. [Holly] Branson is the daughter of American billionaire Richard Branson. Sir Branson is a British billionaire, best known for his “Virgin” brand of companies. (Holly Branson has quit medicine to work for her father.)

The fifth paragraph of a report “‘At Kudankulam, third reactor construction can begin by year-end’” (April 24, 2009) was “However, sources ruled out construction of the seventh and eighth reactors at the same time because of space constraints at Kudankulam.” It should have been “at the same site”.

The Prince of Wales who inaugurated the Royal Indian Military Academy on March 13, 1922, became Edward VIII only when he succeeded King George V in 1936. A clarification in this column (April 24, 2009) referred to him as Prince Edward VIII, the Prince of Wales.

The name of the Prime Minister’s wife is Mrs Gursharan Kaur. The text of a report “55% vote in Phase II” (April 24, 2009, page 1) had it as Gursharan Gaur. (It was right in the accompanying photo caption.)

A report “Voting moving at a leisurely pace in Amethi” (April 24, 2009) said that Rahul Gandhi’s victory margin in 2004 was 2.92 lakh votes and that he polled 46 per cent of the popular vote. Mr. Gandhi secured 66.18 per cent of the popular vote. The polling percentage in Amethi in 2004 was 44.50 per cent.
