Three EVMs for each booth: Collector

PUDUKOTTAI: With as many as 36 candidates in the fray for the Karur Lok Sabha seat, three Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be sent to each booth, District Collector Reeta Harish Thakkar said.

Addressing presspersons at the end of the all-party meeting to explain the election code, convened here on Wednesday, the Collector said that the district administration had a stock of 1,400 EVMs presently and had sought for additional EVMs.

She said that the Viralimalai Assembly constituency in the district went under the jurisdiction of the Karur Lok Sabha seat.

Additional force

The Superintendent of Police, P. Moorthy, said that as many as 120 polling booths have been identified as hyper-sensitive, based on the incidents in the previous elections.

Additional personnel would be deployed in these stations, as a precautionary measure.

He also said that as many as 66 cases of poll violence have been registered in the district. Of them 63 pertained to wall-paintings and three to taking out procession either without prior permission or in violation of permitted route.

Cases registered

A maximum of 31 cases had been registered against the Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam; followed by Bharatiya Janata Party (13); Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (11); All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (7); Congress and Communist Party of India (one each) and others (2).

Mr. Moorthy said that a total of 1,613 police personnel would be deployed at polling booths for ensuring smooth conduct of the elections.

The personnel included 952 constables from the district; 441 Ex-servicemen and Home-Guards; 110 personnel each from the Central Security Force and the striking force from Andhra Pradesh.

The Collector said that a total of 8,94,512 voters of the district will exercise their franchise. Of them, 4,43,120 were men and the remaining 4,51,392, women.

Later, the Observers inspected the EVMs at the Collectorate.
