‘Clean chit’ to Quattrocchi questioned

Staff Correspondent

HASSAN: State president of the Centre for Indian Trade Unions S. Prasanna Kumar on Tuesday demanded that the Congress leadership explain to the nation the reason for withdrawing the Interpol red-corner notice against Ottavio Quattrocchi, an accused in the Bofors scam.

He alleged that this was yet another attempt by the Manmohan Singh Government to use the Central Bureau of Investigation as an instrument to cover up its misdeeds.

Speaking to The Hindu here, Mr. Kumar said this now showed that when a Congress regime was in place, all attempts would be made to subvert justice.

Gujarat investigations

On the investigation of the post-Godhra riots, Mr. Kumar said the decision of the Supreme Court to direct an inquiry into Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s role was welcome.

“It is now imperative that the Special Investigation Team entrusted with the job submits its conclusions within the three-month time-frame set by the court. It is shameful that the Bharatiya Janata Party still continues to defend those responsible for the carnage,” he said.

Mr. Kumar said the decision of the Sri Lankan Government to halt heavy-weapon combat operations was timely. He felt it should come to the rescue of the Tamil civilian population stuck in the war zone. “The LTTE has to stop holding people by force and facilitate their safe passage.

Entry sought

The Sri Lankan Government should allow the International Red Cross and other humanitarian agencies to enter affected areas,” he added.
