Counters at airport to check for swine flu

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Four counters will be opened at the International Airport from Thursday to check for passengers flying in from affected countries for symptoms of swine flu.

This follows alerts from the the Union Ministry of Health and State Health Department to airport authorities to single out and quarantine passengers deplaning with symptoms of swine flu.

Speaking to The Hindu from New Delhi where he went to attend a meeting of health authorities, S.Elango, Director of Public Health, said anyone with signs of flu, cough, cold must be identified and quarantined for further investigation. All those who have travelled via Mexico recently would be questioned to see if they have had any exposure to the influenza virus suspected to be the cause for over 100 deaths in Mexico.

All deputy directors of health in the State have also been alerted to bring any suspicious cases of flu to the attention of the State authorities. Sufficient quantities of Tamiflu and other protective gear such as masks and disinfectants are also being stocked at district level hospitals in case there is an outbreak, Dr. Elango said.
