TDP demand for re-poll in Pulivendula turned down

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Chief Electoral Officer I. V. Subba Rao here on Tuesday ruled out the possibility of conducting re-poll at 54 polling stations in Pulivendula Assembly constituency as sought by the Telugu Desam Party alleging ‘rigging’.

Responding to a plea by a TDP delegation led by K. Yerran Naidu seeking a re-poll, the CEO said he would send the representation to the Election Commission. Speaking to reporters later, the CEO, however, did not see any possibility of the EC responding positively.

One difficulty, he cited was that all the Central observers, who had come for elections duty, have already left the State. Moreover, the polling agents of Telugu Desam and other parties who were present at the booths on the polling day, did not raise any objection at that point of time. Mr. Naidu wanted the CEO to order re-poll, treating the 54 booths as a special case.

May Day

Mr. Subba Rao, said in response to the representation by Communist parties that May Day could be celebrated all over the State as usual, but without participation of Ministers.

He said a training programme would be conducted in the next few days for the 25,000 personnel drafted for counting of votes by C. R. Brahmam, retired secretary of the Election Commission.

He said the cash seized during the searches of vehicles during campaigning amounted to Rs. 37 crore. This amount would be kept in government treasuries till the cases relating to the seizures were disposed of by the relevant courts.
