CHENNAI: Funding for science and technology has improved in recent years in the country. This has helped to bring about improvements in frontier areas of research in nuclear technology, food production and space technology, said T.J. Pandian, Emeritus Professor, Department of Genetics, Madurai Kamaraj University. Speaking at a function here recently, in which Indian Science Monitor’s 6th Annual Achievement Awards were presented to eight individuals who contributed to science and technology, he said, “Research cannot be sustained without funds. Availability of more funds for frontier areas of research is needed to improve science and technology in the country.” Besides Mr. Pandian, those who received the award were Nellai Su. Muthu, scientist and science writer; D. Srinivasan, founder member, Coimbatore Zoological Park and Conservation Centre; R.Mahalakshmi, Vice-Chancellor, Vel Tech, Dr. RR and Dr. SR. Technical University; C. Emmanuel, director-Academics and Research, Global Hospitals and Health City; V.Krishnamourthy, Technologist, vice-president, Cineom Broadcast India; S. Ramachandran, archaeologist, Member-Secretary, South India Social History Research Institute; and V.B. Narayana Murthy, senior consultant, Sundaram Medical Foundation.
