OUAT develops new rice variety

Ministry of Agriculture requested to notify the variety

It is suitable to rain-fed and irrigated medium land of the State

BHUBANESWAR: Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) has developed a new rice variety, ‘Ranidhan’ which can be resistant to bacterial leaf blight and leaf folder, besides having high yielding quality.

Ranidhan is a cross derivative of old rice varieties such as Swarna and ORR 48-1. The new variety has been developed at OUAT’s Regional Research and Technology Transfer Station, Ranital under Bhadrak district.

Breeders Simanchal Sahu and Swapan Kumar Tripathy had been working on development of new variety for last seven to eight years.

Sub-committee

State seed sub-committee headed by State agriculture secretary U. P. Singh released the variety in Orissa and requested Ministry of Agriculture at Centre to notify the new variety.

Other members of the committee included Arabinda Padhee, Director of Agriculture and Food Production, Dibakar Naik, dean of research at OUAT.

In Orissa, farmers widely use rice varieties such as Lalat and Swarna.

The two varieties constitute 60 per cent to 65 per cent of total seed chain. Although Swarna has been a high-yielding variety, it is susceptible to pest and other diseases.

Swarna was developed in Andhra Pradesh. Farmers get as high as 45 quintal to 50 quintal per hectare from Swarna, which has good adaptability characteristic. Huge quantity of nucleus seeds of this variety is procured from Andhra Pradesh for seed production in Orissa every year.

The newly released rice variety ‘Ranidhan’ could be compared with the popular rice variety ‘Swarna’ as regards its maturity duration (142 days -145 days), grain type (medium slender grains) and adaptability, but it had an yield advantage of 4-5 quintal per hactare over Swarna., OUAT’s dean of research said.

He said, “the variety is highly suitable to rainfed and irrigated medium land of the State. It is resistant to lodging and can respond to high fertilizer dose with good tillering ability,” Mr. Naik said.

OUAT dean further said in addition Ranidhan had moderate resistance to Bacterial leaf blight and leaf folder, and would be preferred by farmers for its better gain quality.

Scientists at OUAT hoped new rice variety would be a substitute to Swarna and was expected to better price over Swarna because of its better grain quality.

“For last 3 to 4 years, scientists involved in developing the new variety have gone one place to another conducting its adaptability tests.

After numerous trials, it has been finally released.

We are in process of filling application seeking breeders’ right over the variety,” said Baburam Singh, in-charge of Intellectual Property Right cell of OUAT.
