Sri Lankan issue

Although the Sri Lankan Tamils issue has occupied a prominent place in the election campaign of Tamil Nadu with major political parties leaving no stone unturned to gain political mileage out of it, the truth is that the voters are more concerned about livelihood issues. While the people are worried about their brethren in Sri Lanka, they are also distressed over the game being played out by the political parties over the issue.

M. Jeyaram,

Sholavandan

The use of the Sri Lankan Tamils issue by political parties in Tamil Nadu is a matter of serious concern. Given their pro-LTTE stance, one only hopes the State will not become a safe haven for the fleeing LTTE cadres.

K. Sreedhar,

Doddaballapur

The hue and cry over the Sri Lankan Tamils issue has been growing steadily in the last few months. This is obviously because the elections are on. We find all the political parties in Tamil Nadu getting unduly excited over the issue.

M.E. Avari,

Kodaikanal

Political parties seem to be losing sight of the line that divides the struggle for equality and terrorism. They exploit the misery of the civilians, who have suffered under the army as well as the LTTE, for their gains. I wonder how many politicians waxing eloquent on the Sri Lankan Tamil cause will be seen or heard after the elections.

K.R.A. Narasiah,

While there is talk of how the LTTE, under the leadership of Prabakaran, became a ruthless force, there is one thing many of us ignore — the LTTE’s elimination of over a thousand soldiers of the IPKF between 1987 and 1990. How can political leaders in Tamil Nadu forget their sacrifice? How can a Chief Minister describe a person who ordered the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, our own Prime Minister, as a good friend?

Just because a section of the population speaks Tamil, we cannot meddle in the internal affairs of Sri Lanka. If we were to get involved on behalf of the Tamils everywhere, we will have to interfere in the affairs of Singapore, Malaysia and almost all the countries where the Tamils live.

P.L. Jothindra,

Mysore

With the LTTE’s virtual extinction in Sri Lanka looking inevitable, the future of the Tamils in the country assumes greater significance. The positive attitude displayed so far by President Mahinda Rajapaksa should instil confidence in the minds of the Tamils. India should play a constructive role in the devolution of power and the emergence of a federal structure.

P.P. Sethumadhavan,

Bangalore
