Toy helicopter in Parliament House rattles securitymen

Anti-sabotage check of the device carried out, nothing hazardous found

NEW DELHI: A remote-controlled toy helicopter flew into the high-security Parliament House complex on Wednesday, sending security agencies into a tizzy.

Kanwaljit Deol, the Parliament security in-charge, said the toy was first spotted by a security guard posted inside the complex, who sounded an alarm. The remote-controlled toy landed near the statue of former President Rajendra Prasad around 11-15 a.m. “The area was immediately cordoned off and a thorough anti-sabotage check of the device was carried out,” said Ms. Deol, adding that nothing hazardous was found in the toy.

She said the perimeter personnel have been alerted and asked to keep a close watch on flying objects in the sky to prevent any such incident in future. “We have a technical team that is investigating the incident. The other security agencies will also assist us in the exercise,” said Ms. Deol, adding that efforts were on to identify the toy’s owner.

Although the area around the Parliament complex in the radius of about 3 km has been declared a “no-fly zone”, it is mainly intended for aircraft and it is relatively difficult for the security agencies to keep track of small flying objects.

The Delhi police said they had not received any complaint in connection with the incident so far. They suspect that the toy chopper that strayed into the premises could have belonged to a child.
