THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Expressing concern about the imperceptible retreat of fairness and accuracy in reporting, Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac and Culture Minister M.A. Baby have called for a new media culture that places emphasis on introspection and tolerance to criticism. Inaugurating a Media Research Centre and Centre for Visual Culture, set up by the Kesari Memorial Journalists’ Trust and the Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ), here on Wednesday, the two Ministers also felt that the current times made acquisition of knowledge about several emerging areas imperative for the journalist fraternity. Chairing the inaugural ceremony, Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran said the media needed to be more sensitive to issues of development so that the development projects in the pipeline could be implemented with minimal negative impact on any section of the people. Dr. Isaac called for greater emphasis on media research that could prove beneficial to those who wish to study the history of journalism in Kerala. Mr. Baby, who handed over the first set of books for the Media Research Centre, said the media must be ready to look critical at the current media culture just as it interrogated the contemporary political culture. Senior journalist and Janayugom editor M.P. Achuthan, who was elected to the Rajya Sabha recently, was felicitated at the function. N. Padmanabhan, general secretary, KUWJ, offered felicitation.
