CPI(M): it’s far from fair in Darjeeling

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: Thursday’s Lok Sabha elections in the Darjeeling hills were far from fair, the Left Front leadership said here. “There was one-sided voting in the region,” Biman Bose, Left Front Committee chairman, alleged.

Questioning the high turnout within a short period despite persistent rain, Mr. Bose said that in many places polling agents of CPI(M) candidate Jibesh Sarkar were prevented from carrying out their work by political rivals.

The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), which is demanding the creation of a separate Gorkhaland State carved out of Darjeeling district and areas contiguous to it, is supporting BJP nominee Jaswant Singh in Darjeeling.

There were allegations that GJM activists threatened electors with dire consequences if they did not turn up to vote for Mr. Singh.

The CPI(M) will consider demanding a repoll only after it gets a final report on the developments in the constituency.

Trinamool charge

Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee alleged “total rigging” in the Keshpur assembly segment of the Ghatal constituency in Paschm Medinipur district as well in certain booths in Malda and Uttar Dinajpur districts. She demanded a repoll in these areas.

Ms. Banerjee said the administration in these areas “is totally dominated by the Communist Party of India (Marxist).”
