HYDERABAD: A court here on Thursday convicted a Pakistan national, Malik Arshad Mahmood, for fourteen years imprisonment on the charge of passing on secrets of vital Indian defence establishments to Pakistan. The First Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge L. Sriramamurthy had, on Wednesday, found him guilty of charges levelled against him under provisions of the Official Secrets Act, Foreigners Act and Indian Penal Code. He announced the sentence on Thursday. Malik was arrested by Hyderabad police five years ago on a tip-off that he was taking photographs of important defence offices here and sending them to his handlers in Inter-Services Intelligence of Pakistan through the Internet. A computer and some documents were recovered from him. Subsequent investigation by police disclosed that four more Pakistanis, a Bangladeshi and one person of city by name Milind Dattatreya aided his activity. The police succeeded in arresting Malik and Dattatreya while the others could not be brought to book. Dattatreya, who was charged with arranging funds for Malik through hawala, was acquitted by court for want of evidence.
