Proud moment: Tamil Nadu Teachers’ Education University Registrar A.R. Veeramani distributing graduation certificates at St. Joseph’s College of Education in Udhagamandalam on Wednesday. Udhagamandalam: The role of higher education in facilitating the progress of the nation was emphasised by the Registrar of Tamil Nadu Teachers’ Education University A.R. Veeramani while speaking at the first graduation ceremony of the St. Joseph’s College of Education here on Wednesday. Regretting that in the existing system of higher education there were several shortcomings, he said that the financial allocation was inadequate. The money spent on higher education should be treated as an investment for the future, he said and added that efforts should be made to make higher education available to as many students as possible. Adverting to the importance being given to higher education in countries like Japan, United Kingdom and the United States, he said that there was an acute shortage of universities in India. More should come up, particularly for the students in the rural areas. It was a matter of great concern that only a small percentage of students in India enrolled for higher education, he added. Underscoring the need to improve the quality of teaching, Mr. Veeramani said that it impeded the provision of good quality higher education. The financial status of the teachers should also rise. The Bishop of Ootacamund A. Amalraj also spoke. College principal P.J. Paul Dhanasekaran presented a report. Correspondent of the college J.S.Edward proposed a vote of thanks.
