HYDERABAD: If everything works as planned by the Disaster Management Infrastructure and Control Society (DMICS), former US Vice President, Nobel laureate and environmental activist, Al Gore may fly down to Hyderabad to attend the Second World Congress on Disaster Management in October/ November 2010.

Releasing the compendium of proceedings of the First World Congress on disaster management held here in October 2008, Prahlada, chief controller of DRDO and chairman of the steering committee of the Congress said the next event would be organised on a bigger scale with participation from about 100 countries.

Dr. Gore is being invited for his contribution to building awareness on environmental issues. Along with him R. K. Pachauri, chairman of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, who shared the Nobel peace prize in 2007 with Dr. Gore, has also been invited. Exact dates of the Congress would be decided after getting confirmation from them.

Dr. Prahlada said advance planning was key to the success of disaster management. “We should not wait till the disaster strikes. We need to plan when there is no disaster, may it be at the policy level or for training”.

He said apart from delegates from other countries, representatives from different States would also be invited to participate in the next Congress. He was all praise for the way the State government tackled disasters, especially the cyclone related ones.
