NEW DELHI: With extreme heat wave conditions prevailing over North India and the Capital recording its highest day temperature for April in the past 50 years on Wednesday, the Delhi Government’s Directorate of Education on Thursday advised all schools in the city to close for summer vacation from Friday or latest by Saturday. Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely made it clear that this advisory was meant for all aided, unaided, public and recognised schools functioning in Delhi except Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and Navodaya Vidyalaya schools. The advisory is also meant for schools of all civic bodies in Delhi. The Directorate of Education said the summer vacation for the Delhi Government schools in any case begins on May 1 every year. The advisory of the Delhi Government, sources said, would provide relief to lakhs of children going to school in the searing heat. “By the time most of the children return home from school it is afternoon and the heat is at its peak. Many children also spend a lot of time commuting back in this heat and this early vacation would save them from extreme weather conditions,” said an official.
