10 Sri Lankans die on high seas
Staff Reporter
KAKINADA: Ten Sri Lankan fisherfolk have died of starvation on the high seas in the Bay of Bengal while fleeing the war-ravaged Mullaithivu.
Eleven people survived and landed in a fibre boat at Uppada, near here, on Wednesday night.
The bodies of the victims were thrown overboard. They had starved to death as no food or water was available in the boat. They planned to reach Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu but lost direction as one of them, who served as a guide, died, survivors said.
Suffering from severe dehydration, the refugees are being treated in government hospitals here. They will be shifted to a camp near Rameswaram, said East Godavari District Collector Gopalakrishna Dwivedi.
Mary Joseph Benny said she lost her husband Maria Das, two sons and a daughter during the ordeal.
